Discover Apostle Islands – Lake Superior Wisconsin

The Apostle Islands is my #1 favorite travel destination for a weekend getaway in North America. It does not matter what your travel style is. The Islands can accommodate budget, luxury or even camping! This area has it all, from fine dining to boozing is up at Tom’s Burned Down Café!

Apostle Islands are located in Bayfield Wisconsin on Lake Superior. This destination is truly a paradise with 21 unique islands to explore. The only populated island is the Infamous Madeline Island where you can find just about any kind of accommodations, restaurants, and tons of things to do. The remainder of the islands are reserved for camping and docking your sailboats or houseboats. You can also choose to stay on Mainland in Charming Bayport!  Bayfield is loaded with kitschy shops from dozens of local artist.

Transportation around islands

Unless you have a very large boat to get around to the islands you can book a tour of the islands with Apostle Islands Cruises. There is also a Ferry from Bayport to Madeline Island that runs several times a day. If you choose to stay on the main land you can rent sea kayaks and visit the shoreline made up of water caves. Whatever you plan for this weekend getaway you won’t be disappointed.

The saddest part about writing this article is that 95% of my photos were lost. I would love to write about so many places and things to do here but fear I would just disappoint without the photos. So instead I listed below some fantastic websites that will give a better look into the islands.

I’m with you there LeAnna, I miss Living in Minnesota so much and would love to move back to the Midwest someday. I have spent so much time exploring Wisconsin and Minnesota and it will always be home for me. So many beautiful parks and places to see.

We live in Minnesota, so aren’t that far from the Apostle Islands–we’ve always wanted to road trip there but it never seems to happen! It sounds like such a fantastic spot, and you are really making me want to visit. I would love to take kayaks out and explore!

These Islands look lovely. I’ve made it up to Lake Superior but that landscape is just gorgeous. But why is Madeline Island so infamous?!

Madeline Island is the largest island and the only one that is inhabited. It’s well know for gangsters refuge back in the day. In fact there are quite a few places in Northern Wisconsin and Northern Minnesota where the gangsters used to hang out, like Al Capone and the lot. It’s also a popular summer getaway in the Midwest. The place is so beautiful hope you can see it someday!

I’m always amazed at the incredible places we have here to visit and explore in the states. We often head out of the country but posts like this remind me that we really have a lot of exploring left to do at home.

Since moving abroad, I really miss tooling around the states. I feel very luck that I have so many wonderful weekend getaways and road trips. There is so much unique and beautiful places to visit in the US. But I do love seeing the rest of the world as well and looking forward to seeing more of it.
