How I lost 70 lbs! Keto Diet Weight Loss Success

How I lost weight! 70 lbs in less than a year!

My story of how I lost weight! 70 lbs in less than a year! I used to always say I could stand to take off a good 50 lbs and I know I would feel better about myself. Looking back, it’s incredible to me that I could take off 70 lbs and keep it off. I never imagined I could accomplish such weight loss.

anyone who is overweight or has been overweight can sympathize at the daunting prospect of trying to lose weight. In my story, I had not always been over weight. I was not thin, but I was not heavy either. Multiple life changing events and tragedy took place and I found myself turning to food and buying a whole new wardrobe as each season passed. I went from a size 8 to a size 16 in a matter of 2 years. That’s a whole additional person I added to my frame. I honestly don’t know how I let it get that far. You would think after each season came and I was spending a small fortune on new clothes that I would have taken notice and stopped turning to food for comfort. Ah, but I continued on feeling so ashamed and stayed as far away from a camera as possible! I used to dread summers and had not worn a pair of shorts for 4 years. Bathing suit? Forget it, no way was that going to happen. After a while now feeling depressed about the weight gain, I stopped socializing. I would look for any excuse I could not to go out for happy hour or a party. No beaches, parks or picnic and certainly nowhere that anyone would have a camera!

I have to admit Being heavy can truly be isolating., I have heard many horror stories of people who are overweight being bullied or made fun of. I am grateful that I never experienced that since I did a good enough job beating myself up. Being so unhappy, I knew I had to do something. I started making some huge life changes. Starting with self-love and self-care. I forced myself to smile more and socialize more. I forced myself to make more friends and get out more. I even started letting my picture to be taken (of course I cringed).

In the beginning, I started out slow. Main moto, Tina put the fork down! Serving size for 1 not 3! I started going for walks and eating a little healthier. It was not until I was speaking with a colleague of mine about desperately wanting to lose weight and fast (Because of course patience is not my virtue and I tend to give up if I don’t see results right away) that I started on my journey! Her husband was a coach on a well know national football team and she herself was an active training athlete. Her advice? low carb cycling!

Low Carb cycling, what is that? It’s the method that most top athletes use to keep lean muscle mass while burning only fat. Her basic instructions, were to eat low carb all week and then carb up on the weekend and eggs are your friends! I suppose it makes sense I thought. After all people do circuit training or cycling to prevent their bodies from getting used to the same thing, so it might work with diet as well.

I wanted more information and started researching low carb. I came across all the usual Palo, Low Carb Diet, Adkins, and the lot. So many diets, but the one that caught my eye was Keto! It fit the parameters of what my colleague had recommended for losing weight fast except minus the weekend carb up. Interestingly enough as a pharmaceutical representative, I knew about the ketogenic diet since it is used for children with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. A type of epilepsy mostly seen in children and is not controlled by medication but rather diet. The more I learned in depth about the diet the more convinced I was that this was the diet for me!

To kick start my diet on the first week I started the egg fast to get my body into ketosis and start burning fat. I also exchanged the creamer of my coffee for coconut oil to make my own bullet proof coffee. Within a matter of just two days all the bloat was gone and my face felt thinner. I thought well there must be something to this so I continued for a few more weeks. I remembered what my colleague had said about low carb cycling and being the foodie that I am, I decided that I would treat myself every three weeks or so. Basically, my diet plan consisted of a strict keto diet for 2 to 3 weeks at a time followed by a weekend of eating my favorite foods. When I came off a carb weekend I always started back on a 4-day egg fast. The results were amazing!

I ended up taking off over 20 lbs in the first two weeks. After about 3 months I was down another 30 lbs for a grand total of 50 lbs in just over 3 months! Consequently, Life threw a few more curve balls at me, good ones this time! I ended up falling of the keto wagon so to speak and started eating whatever I wanted to. To my surprise, I continued to take more weight off with an additional 20 lbs without even really trying.  bringing my grand total to 70 lbs!  I basically reversed my diet plan after the first 50 lbs and ate carbs in moderation. I didn’t forget about keto all together and never returned to food for comfort. I would continually go back to the egg fast for about 4 days at a time every other month.

As I am writing this to date, I have not gained a single pound back! Feeling happy and comfortable to be back to a size 8. I never could have imagined. My method is quite unconventional and does not follow a documented diet. I am not a health expert for diet and would always recommend checking with you doctor if you have any health concerns. I have learned over the years that there is no diet that is perfect for anyone person but there are many diets that can help various people. Losing weight as anyone knows is not a one size fits all!

I wish you well in your endeavors of weight loss.

Hi Tina I have been keeping up with your website and only now got round to reading this (too busy with the recipes) really interesting. I am a Type II diabetic and lost 70 lbs as well (weird coincidence) but I did it living in Mexico and pretty much going no carb (not by choice or decision I might add). Still it helped my diabetes immensely and I struggle with the love of carbs – being in Ireland doesn’t bloody help. But am going to try to follow along and see how I do.

    Wow!

I am so happy for your progress. I bet your family is just as proud! Makes me want to show this to my husband and inspire him that he can do it as well. He used to lessen his carbs intake but when he sees the food on the table, he would tend to eat more and get more rice. Ihihi.

    Again, congrats to this feat.

Hi Tina! Props to you for losing all that weight! And thank you for sharing your story. Just to overshare a bit, I’ve been gaining a lot of weight these past couple of years. I don’t eat a lot but my metabolism has slowed down partly because of age and because I live an extremely sedentary lifestyle. :p i’ve never gone on a diet before but the keto piqued my interest because it seems doable and sustainable. Will research about this some more. Thanks so much for sharing! This is super helpful! Ps does bacon count as fat that you can take with your eggs? Hehehe. Kidding:p

Wow, congrats, Tina! I’ve been hearing some good things about the keto appproach on other sites, but I never fully understood it until I read up on ketosis. I am familiar with bulletproof coffee because my husband incorporates it into his regimen, so I know it is beneficial for both mental clarity and weight loss (while working out). I believe it’s my first time on your blog, and I am glad to discover it!

Happy for you! Losing weight is hard compared to gaining weight. I am underweight and have been trying to get myself a few pounds for my weight to be average. I have been underweight my whole life and a lot of people have told me that I lost too many pounds this time around. As for the bullying, it isn’t really the size. I supposed it is more on social skills. I have been bullied before so I know it isn’t the size. Size doesn’t really matter. I didn’t have confidence then and couldn’t stand on my own. It was when I fought back that I realized why they started bullying me. It is because they think they can. Power is not only for the adults. Kids want to feel like they are powerful too.

Thank you Gryselle, Good points, possibly why I never really experienced any bullying because of my personality and being positive and not allowing anyone to have power over me in that way. I think it is difficult on both sides of the coin to gain weight for some and to lose for others. I had a friend who was under weight and could not gain and people used to tell her she was to skinny and there was nothing she could do about it.

I love this. I am trying to lose 20 lbs, but am having trouble at it. I think it could be my condition (Celiac) or it could be something else. I am not sure, but I do know that I want to find a place of health! Thank you for the post!

Thanks Jim, This diet works well with Celiac since your cutting carbs, I have a lot of trouble with gluten allergies which have gone since I started this diet.

I actually had to read this twice and I think this is the most amazing thing I read today! I am a very small woman only standin at 4feet 11 inches and I am 20 kilos overweight and was recently rushed to the er and was told I had bad case of gastritis. I am an emotinal eater and badly need to lose weight and I think I will try this diet. I also think you look great now! such an inspiration 🙂

Thank you Abie, This is a tough one and would actually talk with your doctor as I used to have gallbladder problems and overeating led me to gastritis as well. While I don’t suffer anymore, I do know having acute gastritis requires the elimination of some of the foods that you would eat on a keto diet. Coconut oil thought is very helpful in repairing the lining of your stomach and helping with digestive issues. I wish you all the best!
